Approximately every 6 months Microsoft releases a feature update or an update that adds new features to Windows 10 or acts as a Service Pack by optimizing and consolidating the features previously introduced at the operating system level.
By changing the previous habits, from 2021 the feature updates for Windows 10 spring will be lighter while important news in terms of functionality will arrive with the autumn updates.
The lighter feature updates are also called enablement packages: they are those updates that, due to their structure similar to that of a Service Pack, can be applied with a single reboot of the system.
Not infrequently, after installing a feature update, especially packages that introduce new features, users have complained about the anomalous behavior of Windows 10. Below we see how to manage and solve the most common problems.
blue screen after installing Windows 10
The most serious situation that can be encountered is the inability to start Windows 10 after installing a semi-annual update.
In the event that the blue screen appears immediately when Windows 10 starts and the operating system is no longer loaded correctly, the emergency menu will be presented after two failed starts.
When Choose an option appears, simply click on Troubleshoot, Advanced Options and finally on Uninstall updates.
By clicking on Uninstall the latest feature update, you can cancel the installation of the feature update and restore the previous configuration, with the ability to start Windows 10 regularly.
Internet not working after the update
Another rather common situation is the inability to access the Internet after updating Windows 10.
Apart from the obvious attempt that consists in restarting the Windows 10 device, you can press Windows + R , type ncpa.cpl , right-click on the network interface you are using, choose the Disable item then double-click on the same icon.
If the network connection still does not work, we suggest typing cmd in the Windows 10 search box, press the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER then write the following:
ping 127.0.0.1
In this way you can check if the network stack is working correctly: if you receive a response from the local system it means that there are no problems.
You can also try to update the network card driver or, vice versa, bring it back to the previous version: just press Windows + R , type devmgmt.msc , look for the Network adapters section , double click on the device name, on the Driver tab finally referring to the Update Driver and Roll Back Driver buttons .
In the first case, you can search in the support area of the PC manufacturer’s website for an updated version of the driver (then click on Search for drivers on my computer and specify the folder in which the drivers in uncompressed format have been saved).
If the ping 127.0.0.1 command returns a positive result, you will need to check the correct configuration of the network interface by right-clicking on it from the open tab with the ncpa.cpl command and choosing Properties .
In the sections Internet Protocol Version 4 and Internet Protocol Version 6 (if enabled) you can generally try to select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically .
At the Windows 10 command prompt you can then type:
ipconfig / release
ipconfig / renew
Using a temporary profile: Your files seem to have disappeared
In some cases, the Windows 10 update installation procedure may fail indicating that you are logged in with a temporary profile.
In these situations, uninstalling the feature update usually allows you to overcome the problem while waiting for Microsoft, based on the reports received, to take charge and resolve the anomalous behavior.
To proceed with the uninstallation of the latest feature update, just type Recovery Options in the Windows 10 search box then click on Start corresponding to Return to the previous version of Windows 10 .
The Windows 10 update changed all the default apps
Another “classic” after installing a Windows 10 update is to change the default programs.
Applications configured as default for certain operations or for opening certain files are no longer indicated as such: to solve this, just write Default Apps in the search box and then refer to the window of the same name.
The links Choose predefined apps by file type and Choose predefined apps by protocol allow you to associate programs installed in Windows 10 with specific file extensions or the use of various protocols.
